I ran across an interesting article today on marketing your library. It’s called the “Social Media” card, and it’s basically a business card with all of your social networking info on it. Sounds pretty cool, especially when you think about all the people you tell all day long about library programs, books you like to read, etc. You could just hand them a card and say, “Hey, check my out on XYZ social network if you’re interested in more.” Seems like a pretty good way to get more buzz for the library to me! I would love to see if there is an increase in traffic at programs because of such a card – just a thought!

If you’re a librarian, you probably find yourself spending most of your time on the Info Desk getting the newest movie releases for customers. I never realized how much time I spend looking up movies until I spent the week between Christmas and NYE on the desk for 7 hours a day. So when a lady came up asking for book recommendations, I was thrown for a loop. I forgot how much fun it is to find a customer books!! She was looking for light, humorous mysteries to read on her vacation. I was in heaven. Below are a few titles I recommended:

Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich
Candy Apple Red, Electric Blue, and Ultraviolet (series) by Nancy Bush
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation (series) by Lauren Willig

What titles do you like in this genre?

500 Days of SummerTom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a greeting-card writer that believes in fate and true love. Summer (Zooey Deschanel) is his new co-worker who believes in nothing, especially relationships and love. It is no surprise that the two of them come together. The question is whether or not Tom will change Summer’s perceptions of love by the end of the movie.

The story is not told in chronological order, but it what appears to be memories as they come to Tom. We are able to keep track of what day it is in their relationship by the day popping up on the screen. While this may sound confusing, it works for this movie.

Throughout the story, we grow attached to Tom while Summer still remains a mystery to us…and to Tom. I don’t know about other viewers, but I just wanted to give Tom a hug several times as he tries to compromise with Summer to make their relationship work.

There are scenes that seem out of place (Tom becomes part of a dance number with a cartoon bird), but when all brought together, it tells a quirky, lovely story.

The soundtrack is also enjoyable. Check them both out at your local library. ;)

EVPLBCDTUPDATE: Check out the EVPLBCDT page! It’s full of epic pictures, video, and more fun than you can probably handle!!!

The semi-hip librarians are the master minds behind the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library Book Cart Drill Team, affectionately known as the EVPLBCDT from here on out! The team was originally created to help celebrate the 5th Anniversary of EVPL’s Central Library, but it became a hit and we were asked to try out for The Really Big Show, a fundraiser for Evansville ARC. And so we come to the point of this post – we have our FINAL audition on Thursday, January 14th at 6pm at Washington Square Mall. We need your support to make it to The Really Big Show, so come on out and cheer us on! You won’t be disappointed, and we guarantee you will be entertained, entirely at our expense!

For your viewing enjoyment, please see the following videos:
